“Exit Strategy, Meet Your Challenge: Iraq” (TIMES, 8/8/10)

At last, an explicit account in the TIMES of what is really going on in Iraq; i.e., U.S. troops will remain there at least until December 31, 2011!

There has been a significant reduction in the amount of troops remaining in Iraq after 8/31/10 but there will still be six brigades (50,000 soldiers) positioned around the country’s major cities. These forces will intervene in any fighting that breaks out or for the purpose of protecting some site important to the USA.

There will be no withdrawal this year. The American people are being misled by slight of hand being covered up by double-talk. That there could be more combat for these “training brigades” is very likely, given the uncertainty of the political situation in this beleaguered country. Nobody can honestly say the fighting has stopped or that there will be no further U.S. casualties.

Once again, the Obama administration is asking the people to wait, that nothing significant can be done now. And what a long way off is December 31, 2011.
