“In Recession New Jobs Often Mean Lower Wages” (TIMES, 9/1/10)

With Labor Day just around the corner, the condition of the U.S. work force looks grim indeed. Unemployment, underemployment or low wages is the lot of too many people.

In his Oval Office speech, Obama did say he would be giving more attention to the country’s domestic problems, which hopefully means the implementation of a significant federal jobs program.

Absent that kind of New Deal strategy, the alleged  “recovery” will continue to be feeble. The private sector cannot provide the number of decent jobs that the U.S. economy desperately needs, not only to relieve the suffering of working people but also to bring the economic downturn to a halt.
