“Some Skeptics Questioning Rosy Reports on War Zone” by Elizabeth Bumiller (TIMES, 11/8/10)

Kudos to Elizabeth Bumiller for her sober view of the fighting in Afghanistan.

Evidently, there is a debate about this war between the intelligence specialists and the military commanders, the latter led by General David H. Petraeus, that master “at shaping opinion,” which will lead to some kind of assessment next month.

A report from Jeremy Scahill on a recent Democracy Now program contradicts the rosy view of this ambitious commander (and future presidential candidate?).

Even Richard C. Holbrooke, who still no doubt expects to be secretary of state someday, wonders whether the Petraeus-led campaign “will be sustainable.”

Meanwhile, American combat deaths in Afghanistan have reached 1353.
