“Afghan Leader Questions U.S. Military Operations” (TIMES, 3/13/11)

Hamid Karzai “has raised tension with American officials” again around the issue of “civilian casualties.” He wants NATO and the USA to “stop these operations” that kill and wound Afghan non-combatants.

Air attacks, from helicopter strikes to armed drones, are much less precise than an engagement between ground troops. However, U.S. strategy (the Petraeus surge) seeks victory over the insurgents with minimal losses in its ranks.

The U.S. death toll in this “necessary war” is already 1483. If that figure gets much higher, more Americans will join those of us calling for a withdrawal from Rumsfeld’s quagmire.

In other words, these air strikes will continue no matter how many tears Karzai sheds.
