“The Ike Phase” by David Brooks (TIMES, 3/15/11)

What I remember about Eisenhower’s farewell address was his dire warning about the growing strength of the military-industrial complex. Leave it to “moderate conservative” David Brooks to distract his readers from the main point of that speech.

Of course, Brooks rarely talks about the military influence in U.S. politics, not even when he complains about government spending. Nor does he comment on the revolving door between the armed forces and the armaments industries, how senior officers get cushy positions with the makers of weapons when they retire (with very generous pensions).

“All the News That’s Fit to Print” should be explained to this cherry picker. It might go a long way in improving your Tuesday and Friday issues.
