“NATO and Afghan Forces Push Taliban Out of Seized Town” (TIMES, 5/26/11)

Yes, the Taliban were pushed out of a town they had seized in Nuristan Province but the security of the area is very much in question, provincial governor Jumaluddin Badar doubting that the Afghan government “could maintain control in the future.”

Badar also pointed out that “the enemy had heavier and more developed weapons” and reported that “50 percent of the police in Do Ab don’t have weapons and most of them are not even trained.”

This, after almost a decade of a U.S. presence in Afghanistan!

Meanwhile, 1571 American service members “have died as a part of the Afghan war and related operations.”
