Afghanistan articles (TIMES, 6/20/11)

In terms of the U.S. lives lost (1606 dead) and the money being spent ($2 billion a week), the cost of the so-called “necessary war” is too high. On the other hand, the size of the force trying to secure Afghanistan is too low.

To accomplish what outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates wants would necessitate the complete conquest of the country.

In short, the expectations of solving the Afghanistan problem are unrealistic and that fact should be faced squarely by the executive and legislative branches of the government.
