“3 Senators Voice Worries on Obama’s Withdrawal Plan” (TIMES, 7/4/11)

These empty criticisms of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan from two prominent Republicans and an independent tell us more about the election of 2012 than they do about military strategy.

Though a bit early for predictions, it has been bandied about that David Petreus will be the Republican presidential candidate in 2012. If that is true, the criticism of Obama as the nation’s commander-in-chief would surely redound to this highly decorated officer.

Eisenhower’s promise to get the U.S. out of Korea was a factor in his electoral victory in 1952. Will Petreus be so positioned for a similar move sixty years later?
