“Pentagon Sounds Alarm On Threat of Budget Cuts” by Elisabeth Bumiller

Just as I thought after reading Bumiller’s 8/2/11 story about cuts in defense spending, it is only a possibility that any deep reductions will actually be implemented over the next decade.

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has drawn the line at $400 billion (well below what is expected by President Obama), claiming that anything more “would do real damage to our security, our troops and their families, and our ability to protect the nation.”

This is the usual scare talk employed by a military-industrial complex rarely willing to reveal the corruption and waste in that spending.  Some of the money has even been used to bribe the Taliban to allow vital supplies to reach our fighting forces.  Other funds have financed luxury housing being constructed out of the country for the Afghani elite.
