“Pakistanis Tied to 2007 Attack On Americans” (TIMES, 9/27/11)

“New Details Emerge of Ambush at Border” (four years later!), reads the sub-title of this col;umn by Carlotta Gall, which is an acknowledgment that the story has been withheld from the public for more than four years.  Oh, what that shadow presidency of 2001-2009 got away with!

U.S. Army Major Larry J. Bauguess, who entered the Pakistani village of Teri Mangal on May 14, 2007 for a meeting with Afghan and Pakistani “allies,” was shot down in cold blood while awaiting transportation back to his helicopter.  The gunman, killed by return fire, was a member of the Pakistani truce team, yet to date there has been no real attempt to learn what happened.  After all, the CIA wouldn’t want to upset its Pakistani pals!

The shadow presidency is gone (though two of its leading players, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, have published books about their roles during that awful time)but we have a president who once opposed the war in Iraq and has pledged to bring the troops home from that country  and Afghanistan by 2014.

Will Obama be true to these pledges: out of Iraq by 12/31/11 and Afghanistan by 2014?  Then, maybe there can be a genuine investigation of what the U.S. government hoped to accomplish in those two countries.  We may even find out something about our relations with Pakistan!
