“A Leader’s Death Exposes Disarray in the Afghan Peace Process” (TIMES, 10/4/11)

It is difficult to see any “peace process” taking place in Afghanistan.  The war there drags on and on in great part because of Pakistan’s duplicity.  Their Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is too fearful of India to support a real effort to defeat the Taliban.

Such a position seriously weakens the ability of the United States to resolve the situation; yet, our troops will remain in this quagmire created by Donald H. Rumsfeld until 2014, even as our casualties are increasing.  (1783 U.S. service members have already died there.)

After U.S. troops are evacuated from Iraq by the end of this year, we should consider an earlier withdrawal from Afghanistan.
