RE: “The Capitalism Debate” by David Brooks (TIMES, 7/17/12)

July 21, 2012

The American people have been seeing “the scandals and excesses” of capitalism at least from the earliest days of the Republic.  Even Alexander Hamilton, a Brooks hero, was tainted by economic scandals.

Of course, with capitalism so ardently favored by both of our major political parties, it is no wonder that a healthy assessment of possible alternatives cannot be discussed.

The discussion going on now is one between conservatives (the Democrats) and reactionaries (the Republicans).  They both support the rapacious capitalism of the military-industrial complex.

All we progressives can do is vote for the lesser of two evils.

RE; “Is Our Patriotism Moral?” (TIMES, 7/4/12)

July 4, 2012

Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.

Does Gary Gutting love the rapacious capitalism that is so deeply ingrained in the U.S. business elite and its lackies in government?

Does he believe that God blessed America, as patriots are smugly claiming when they sing that hymn?

Doesn’t it border on sacrilege to believe that God favors the people of the United States over all others?  (How do patriots know what God thinks?)

So, on Independence Day I say: Long live the American Revolution that promised freedom and equality and down with the patriotic creed which is the handmaiden of the monopoly capitalists who have such a rigid hold on this country!
